He also served on the Holy Family School Board and Athletic Association and coached both basketball and soccer. The family moved to Redmond in 1991 and became members of St. Jude's Catholic Church. In his leisure time he enjoyed all aspects of aviation, traveling, gardening and most importantly, spending time at his retreat in Chelan, Wash.

In addition to his wife, Phyllis, survivors include son David R. Charles, Sammamish, Wash.; daughter Katie A. Middlebrook, San Francisco; two sisters Margi Charles Adams, Chelan; and Kate Barrett, Sacramento, Calif.; and one granddaughter.
